Frequently Asked Questions
What is sport for development?
Access to sport and physical activity is a human right. Sport is well recognised internationally as a low-cost and high-impact tool for development and a powerful agent for social change. It is a culturally accepted activity that brings people together and unites families, communities and nations. Effective sport-for-development programs combine sport and play with other non-sport outcomes to achieve development objectives.
What does Sport Matters do?
Sport Matters is a non-government organisation based in Australia that aims to make a positive and long-lasting impact on development in Australia and developing countries with a focus on the Pacific, Asia and Africa. Our vision is More Sport. Less Poverty. and we believe that sport is unique and very powerful tool to contribute to development in Australia and overseas. Sport Matters is a full member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) and a signatory to the ACFID Code of Conduct.
How is rugby helping children in Laos?
ChildFund Australia works in partnership with children and their communities to create lasting and meaningful change by supporting long-term community development and promoting children's rights. ChildFund Australia believes that every child has the right to live free from poverty. ChildFund Australia partners with the Lao Rugby Federation and uses sport to ensure that children are protected, healthy and participating in the decisions that affect them in their communities.
Child labour in the sports industry is no great secret but switching to fair-trade sports equipment can ensure that you're not contributing to the exploitation of children. Jinta Sport is Australia’s first fair-trade sports brand. The purchase of Jinta Sport products is guaranteed to be child labour free and that the workers involved in the production are treated with dignity and paid living wages. Jinta Sport manufactures their sports equipment at a certified fair-trade factory in Pakistan. The brand name Jinta is a Warlpiri (Australian Aboriginal tribe based in the Northern Territory) word which means ‘one’ and is generally used to mean ‘winner’.
